ENCORE QUIZ ON THE ECONOMY

Since only 9 enthusiasts among us braved the cold this past Wednesday evening to discuss “The Dismal Science” the rest of us may wish to ponder the following questions, most of which were raised during our discussion –

1. What happens if the US dollar becomes worthless??? What happened in Germany in the 1930’s when the Reichmark became worthless??? What happened in the Soviet Union in the 1990’s when the Ruble effectively became worthless???

2. How do urban dwellers barter with farmers for food if there are no banks, because a run on a few banks caused a “fire sale” of banking assets forcing all banks to “close their doors”???

3. What natural advantage have attractive young females had historically in bartering with farmers for food for themselves and their families???

4. What will happen to the US dollar when the economy revives??? In formulating your answer, think of the economy as a corpse which normally holds 7 pints of blood, into which 30 pints of blood have been pumped in an attempt to get the corpse to walk again.

5. Is there a difference between trying to keep the banking system operational, and trying to help “The Big Three” US-incorporated automakers avoid the kind of reformation that most of the US airlines (some multiple times), Texaco in the 1980’s, etc., etc. have obtained in Bankruptcy Court???

6. Why does Congress think it could do a better job of reforming “The Big Three” US-incorporated automakers than a Bankruptcy Court whose specialty, of course, is reforming companies???

7. Why does Sen. Christopher Dodd demagogue the issue by claiming that “The Big Three” US-incorporated automakers will disappear overnight if they follow the US airlines, Texaco, etc., etc., into voluntary bankruptcy reformation???

8. Why does Sen. Christopher Dodd scare away Detroit customers by claiming that they should not want to buy a car from a company that may go bankrupt??? After all, it is no secret that “The Big Three” US-incorporated automakers will eventually be forced into voluntary bankruptcy reformation no matter what Congress does!!! And, after all, the parts plants of each of “The Big Three” to which all tools & dies are sent with each model changeover so that spare parts can continue to be manufactured for at least 10 years – at a minimum would be viable businesses that would survive any bankruptcy!!!

We hope to see all of you on WEDNESday Jan. 14!!!

Your friend,

John K.
