Suggested Discussion Outline

Post by johnkarls »

.

The following outline is respectfully suggested –

**********************
A. Comments About Specific Chapters of “No Trade Is Free: Changing Course, Taking On China, and Helping America’s Workers” – 60 minutes

Our tradition is to devote the first portion of each monthly meeting to going through the focus book, chapter by chapter, to invite important comments that are specific to a particular chapter. After all, each participant (except, perhaps, “first timers”) have taken the time to read the focus book and her/his opportunity to opine on anything in the focus book should NOT be denied.

HOWEVER, our total meeting time of 120 minutes should prove a SEVERE constraint, so please be sure your comments really are important.

Introduction

Part One: Foundations

Chapter 1 – Where It Started
Chapter 2 – Where We Are Now
Chapter 3 – A Short and Selective History of US Trade Policy
Chapter 4 – How the WTO Has Failed America

Part Two: China - Our Greatest Challenge

Chapter 5 – Our Greatest Geopolitical Threat
Chapter 6 – Twenty-First-Century Mercantilism” China’s Economic System
Chapter 7 – An Economic Threat
Chapter 8 – Changing the Direction
Chapter 9 – Beginning to Negotiate
Chapter 10 – Making a Deal Concrete
Chapter 11 – The Way Forward

Part Three: Managing Globalization - North America

Chapter 12 – From NAFTA to USMCA: The Great Issues
Chapter 13 – USMCA: Mexico and Canada
Chapter 14 – Round Two of USMCA: On to Congress

Part Four: Managing Globalization - The Rest of the World

Chapter 15 – Europe and Japan
Chapter 16 – Other Major Trading Partners
Chapter 17 – Transcending Issues That Affect the Economy

Part Five: Moving Forward

Chapter 18 – A Prescription for the Future

B. Further Discussion – 30 minutes

This month’s “Short Quiz” was entitled “The Relationship of ‘No Free Trade’ to last month’s focus book ‘Poverty, by America’ by Prof. Desmond.”

The Short Quiz and Suggested Answers reviewed four actions our Non-Partisan Public-Policy Study/Action Group had taken in four areas vis-à-vis American poverty –

(1) Exporting American Jobs – most-recent campaign at viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1215&sid=7a37777da ... 10371c56ea.

(2) Educating America’s Permanent 30% Under-Caste – most-recent campaign at viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1925&sid=7a37777da ... 10371c56ea.

(3) The United Nations Two-Decade War on Modern-Day Slavery – most-recent campaign at viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1828&sid=7a37777da ... 10371c56ea.

(4) Saving the Fed Gov $86 Billion/YEAR by Enacting “Medicare For All” – most-recent campaign at viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1869&sid=7a37777da ... 10371c56ea – NB: explanation re to whom it was directed at viewtopic.php?f=757&t=2393&sid=7a37777d ... 10371c56ea.

*****
The participants at last month’s meeting decided that the content was still current and no re-direction was needed for No. 2 and No. 4.

They also decided that the content was still current but re-direction to Pres. Biden was necessary for No. 3. The letter to Pres. Biden with FedEx tracking number is available at viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2401&sid=e6488bf21 ... 0c3d2faf2e.

C. Exporting American Jobs (please see Item 1 in Sec. B)– 30 minutes

The participants at last month’s meeting decided that the content MAY NOT still be current AND re-direction to Pres. Biden was needed.

The problem???

Please see “Combatting the Exportation of American Jobs with Foreign Exchange Controls vs. Import Tariffs” posted for last month’s meeting at viewtopic.php?f=759&t=2397&sid=e6488bf2 ... 0c3d2faf2e.

The answer???

The participants at last month’s meeting voted “No Trade Is Free” as this month’s focus book so that we could more knowledgeably decide whether to send our new letter to Pres. Biden urging Foreign Exchange Controls or Import Tariffs.

So what do you think???
