Original Eulogy in Our June 14 Weekly E-Mail

Post by johnkarls »

Dear Friends,

*****
Late last evening, I was devastated to learn that Tim Russert had collapsed and died of a heart attack yesterday afternoon.

Tim Russert is the person most often quoted on our Bulletin Board since he was not only NBC's Washington Bureau Chief but also the host of "Meet the Press."

The reason why more of his interviews than anyone else's have been posted is that he "always did his homework" and challenged each of his guests with numerous quotations of what they had said in the past. National and world leaders would "have their hearts in their mouths" when he interviewed them, but knew nobody would take them seriously if they ducked him.

Yet all of the tributes since his passing indicate everyone loved him because, despite being so tough, he was so fair and so genial. One of those rare individuals who has a genuine joie de vivre!!!

"The garbage man from Buffalo" is how he liked to be known and how he always came across!!! For those of you who might not have read "Big Russ and Me: Father and Son: Lessons of Life" (2004 - paperback 5/11/2005), he worshipped his father who was a life-long garbage man and treasured his own experiences working as a garbage man every summer while in college.

An especially poignant moment occurred 2-3 weeks ago when, instead of closing "Meet the Press" with his traditional "If It's Sunday, It's Meet the Press," Tim apologized with a twinkle in his eye that he would like to close instead by congratulating the graduating class of Boston College and one of its members (whom he did not identify).

Some of the tributes that have been flowing in identified the Boston College graduate as Tim's son who has begun a career in broadcast sports journalism (Tim had loved sports as much as politics).

It is nice to be reminded occasionally that we pass this way but once, and we should be alert to do everything we can do to improve the existence of our fellow human beings. Tim is one of those rare mensch's who have shown the way!!!

John,

I was also devastated by Tim Russert's death and do wonder who will do this
election broadcasting as well. Thanks for your own eulogy; mine joins yours.
I'll miss him every Sunday morning for a long time to come.

Linda
