Cancellation of Official Status of April 11 Meeting

Click here for the 3/24/2018 notice that the April 11 meeting will not be official because we did not achieve our minimum quorum of 6 RSVP’s.

Also click here for two postings on John Karls’ research during the time that was freed up regarding how Harvard College was a component of Cambridge University and known as “Cambridge University in New England” before Harvard morphed into a university in its own right with the formation of Harvard Divinity School in 1816 and Harvard Law School in 1817.

Dear Friends,

In accordance with our quorum policy, last Saturday’s weekly e-mail requested RSVP’s for our April 11 meeting on “Our Damaged Democracy: We The People Must Act” by Joseph Califano Jr. and stated the meeting would be cancelled if our minimum quorum of six RSVP’s was not obtained by midnight last evening.

Only 3 RSVP’s were received which is surprising since the focus book was selected at our March 14 meeting by a first-round 6-3 vote, so the normal pattern would have featured considerably more RSVP’s than the 6 affirmative votes.

In accordance with our regular policy under such circumstances, Yours Truly will meet on April 11 to discuss the focus book with any of the RSVP’s who would like to do so.

However, such a meeting (if it takes place) will be unofficial. Which means, inter alia, that it cannot propose any e-mail campaigns since all of the other approximately 150 recipients of our weekly e-mail who might want to participate in any e-mail campaign decision, are now entitled to make other plans for April 11. And unofficial also means no further promotion, such as Short Quizzes and Suggested Discussion Outlines.

[If any non-RSVP would like to participate in such an unofficial meeting, if it takes place, s/he would be welcome but even if the number of such non-RSVP’s produces total attendance of 6 or more, the unofficial meeting does NOT become official.]

Since any unofficial meeting on April 11 does NOT have authority to vote for the next focus book, our policy under such circumstances is that the focus book for the next meeting will be the proposal posted in the second section of http://www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org entitled “Possible Topics For Future Meetings” which has received the largest number of “views.”

Accordingly, the focus book for our meeting on Wednesday evening, May 16, will be “The Quartet: Orchestrating the Second American Revolution, 1783-1789” by Prof. Joseph Ellis (Paperback edition published 5/3/2016 by Vintage -- 220 pages sans notes & index -- $7.68 + shipping or $11.99 Kindle from Amazon.com) -- 3 of 3 copies of the original hardcover edition (Alfred E. Knopf - 2015) are currently available from the Salt Lake City Library -- 12 of 14 copies of the original hardcover edition (Alfred E. Knopf - 2015) are currently available from the Salt Lake County Library.

Next Saturday’s weekly e-mail will request RSVP’s for the May 16 meeting on “The Quartet.”

If you were NOT one of the RSVP’s for the April 11 meeting on “Our Damaged Democracy” but would like to participate in an unofficial discussion of that book on April 11 if the RSVP’s decide to have one, please hit your “Reply” button and type “I would like to attend April 11 if it takes place.”

Your friend,

John K.

PS -- To un-subscribe, please press "reply" and type "deletion requested."

NB: Please do NOT block our e-mail because you are too embarrassed to request a deletion -- 10 of our approximately 150 regular e-mail recipients use Comcast.net which has an algorithm blocking all e-mails from a website for which a certain percentage of recipients have requested blockage AND 3 of our regular meeting attendees who use Comcast.net now can NOT receive our weekly e-mails.
