Meeting Cancellation Info

.
Our weekly e-mail last Saturday (Dec 16) had said that IAW our normal policy, our Jan 10 meeting would be cancelled if we did not receive our minimum quorum of six RSVP’s by last midnight.

Accordingly, our Jan 10 meeting is cancelled.

Since the U.S. Constitution still contains the Right to Assembly and the Right to Free Speech, the RSVP’s for a cancelled meeting often decide to have an unofficial meeting to discuss the focus book.

However, unofficial means no more promotion (Short Quizzes, Suggested Discussion Outlines, etc.) and that the unofficial meeting cannot take any official action such as voting for the focus book for the following month or voting to launch one of our Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mails.

The focus book for the following month, in such circumstances, is the Proposed Focus Book posted in the second section of http://www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org that has received the greatest number of “views.”

Accordingly, the focus book for Wed Feb 7 (both Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday fall on Feb 14) is Ted Gurney’s proposal of “$2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America” by Kathryn J. Edin and H. Luke Shaefer [Originally published by Houghton Mifflin September 2015 – Paperback edition by Mariner Books – 240 pages.]

Amazon.com -- $8.40 paperback + shipping or $9.99 Kindle.
Other bookstores listed on Amazon -- from $4.69 used + shipping.
Salt Lake Public Library – 3 of 3 copies currently available.
Salt Lake County Library – 2 of 2 copies currently available.

Dear Friends,

Our weekly e-mail last Saturday had said that IAW our normal policy, our Jan 10 meeting would be cancelled if we did not receive our minimum quorum of six RSVP’s by last midnight.

DESCRIPTION FROM THE INSIDE FLY LEAF FOR THIS NY TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR --

A revelatory account of a kind of poverty so extreme, and so often hidden, most Americans don’t think it exists

Jessica Compton’s family of four would have no income if she didn’t donate plasma twice a week at her local donation center in Tennessee. Modonna Harris and her teenage daughter Brianna, in Chicago, have gone for days with nothing to eat other than spoiled milk.

After two decades of groundbreaking research on American poverty, Kathryn Edin noticed something she hadn’t seen -- households surviving on virtually no cash income. Edin, whose deep examination of her subjects lives has turned sociology upside down (Mother Jones), teamed with Luke Shaefer, an expert on surveys of the incomes of the poor. The two made a surprising discovery: the number of American families living on $2.00 per person, per day, has skyrocketed to one and a half million American households, including about three million children.

But the fuller story remained to be told. Where do these families live? How did they get so desperately poor? What do they do to survive? In search of answers, Edin and Shaefer traveled across the country to speak with families living in this extreme poverty. Through the book’s many compelling profiles, moving and startling answers emerge: a low-wage labor market that increasingly fails to deliver a living wage, and a growing but hidden landscape of survival strategies among America’s extreme poor. Not just a powerful exposé, $2.00 a Day delivers new evidence and new ideas to our national debate on income inequality.
