The Call To Action

[Editorial Note: As noted below, the suggested e-mail text to Sen. McCain was broken into two parts because of Sen. McCain’s 4000-character limit for messages. Unfortunately, in order to minimize the chance of frustration for participants in our Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mail Campaigns, Yours Truly’s own e-mail to the decision maker is sent only a few moments before sending out our weekly e-mail which goes out pre-dawn on Saturdays and 3:05 on a Saturday morning is not a time when Yours Truly has the patience, when suddenly confronted with an undisclosed limitation, to edit down 15% of a message.]

Dear Friends,

We take great pride in our Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mail campaigns to key decision makers which, with only a few computer keyboard key strokes, can be sent by each of our members (1) to key decision makers, and (2) to all of our member's friends and acquaintances requesting them to do the same in an unending chain. [Indeed, these campaigns are what make us more than an unimportant self-edification group of patriotic policy wonks.]

Accordingly, we also take great pride that each of our recommendations has been approved unanimously by the attendees of one of our meetings or, at most, received only one dissent.

[Of the 12 attendees of our 1/9/2017 meeting on “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters In The End” by Harvard Medical School Prof. Atul Gwande, four participants who would be called “conservative” in conventional terms, opposed “Medicare For All” -- and all four had RSVP’d for our 7/12/2017 meeting on “An American Sickness: How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take It Back” by Dr. Elisabeth Rosenthal. Following the 7/12/2017 meeting, Yours Truly personally lobbied the four holdouts (all of the other 7/12/2017 attendees were already on record from the 1/9/2017 meeting as favoring “Medicare For All”) and am delighted to report that all four were persuaded that “Medicare For All” aligns with conservative principles because it should save the U.S. Government $300 BILLION/year. Accordingly, this campaign is unanimous.]

The reasons for the campaign are contained in the recommended E-mail to Senator McCain that appears below at the end of this E-mail.

If you agree with the recommended E-mail to Sen McCain that appears below, please:

(1) send the already-prepared e-mail text at the end of the following e-mail to all of your friends and acquaintances, to Sen. McCain at http://www.mccain.senate.gov/public/ind ... ntact-form IN TWO SECTIONS BECAUSE OF SEN. McCAIN’S MESSAGE LIMIT OF 4000 CHARACTERS -- this only requires FOR EACH OF THE TWO SECTIONS -- (A) providing your contact information, (B) selecting “Health” from the drop-down menu of topics, and (C) cutting-and-pasting the following text into the “Message” box -- please don’t forget to check “Yes” to the question below the “Message” box whether you would like a response; and

(2) forward to all your friends and acquaintances the following e-mail -- so that, through no more than six degrees of separation to 100% of the American population, we reach everyone in a cascading chain.

Subj: CALL TO ACTION – "SIX-DEGREES-OF-SEPARATION" E-MAIL CAMPAIGN RE SAVING THE U.S. GOV $300 BILLION/YEAR BY ENACTING “MEDICARE FOR ALL” – (only 5 minutes needed to participate)

Dear Friends,

Re: Your Participation in an E-mail Campaign to U.S. Senator John McCain Requesting Him To Spearhead A Bi-Partisan Legislative Effort Based On Recognition That True Conservatism Requires The Enactment Of Single-Payer Healthcare (i.e., “Medicare For All”) In Order To Save The U.S. Government $300 Billion/Year --

I have been requested to participate in the referenced "call to action" and request that you participate as well.

It is the 26th such Call to Action on various topics recommended by a monthly patriotic public-policy study group over the last 11.5 years comprising already-prepared e-mails that can be sent to key decision makers on important policy issues.

The group’s attendance averages 11-12 participants come from all walks of life but regular attendees include several attorneys and 3 University of Utah scientists. [In addition, its three meetings over the years on nuclear issues have been led by a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the U/Tenn - Oak Ridge National Nuclear-Research Laboratory.] More information about the group is available at http://www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org.

The campaigns are based on the fact that there are no more than six degrees of separation between us and 100% of the American population.

And that, on important occasions, we can send to all of our friends and acquaintances an already-prepared e-mail (1) for them to send to key decision makers, and (2) for them to send to all of their friends and acquaintances to do the same in an unending chain.

The salient reasons for the campaign are contained in the following already-prepared e-mail to Sen. John McCain.

The reasons for sending the e-mails to Republican U.S. Senator McCain are --

(1) Sen. McCain cast the deciding vote in the U.S. Senate against the Republican-only healthcare bill in the early-morning hours of Friday July 28 after giving an impassioned speech on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday July 25 calling for a bi-partisan healthcare bill – flying back to the Senate from Arizona where he had undergone surgery for brain cancer only four days earlier on Friday July 21; and

(2) During his 31-year (and counting) Senate career, Sen. McCain has led numerous bi-partisan “Gangs of Eight” to forge bi-partisan legislation on various topics.

If you agree with the recommended E-mail to Sen. John McCain, the text of which appears below, please:

(1) send the already-prepared e-mail text following immediately below to Sen.

(2) forward to all your friends and acquaintances this entire e-mail -- so that, through no more than six degrees of separation to 100% of the American population, we reach everyone in a cascading chain.

-------------------------- Your Suggested E-mail to Sen. John McCain – Part I --------------------------

The Honorable John S. McCain III
Senior U.S. Senator – Arizona

Dear Sir:

Re: Saving The U.S. Government $300 Billion/Year By Enacting “Medicare For All”

As you are probably aware --

(1). The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reports that the percentage of American Gross Domestic Product (“GDP”) spent on healthcare is more than twice the average of developed countries!!!

(2) The U.N.’s World Health Organization ranks “the health system performance” of the U.S. as only 37th in the world -- which means that since there are only 35 members of the OECD, American healthcare is outranked by at least two third-world countries!!!

*****
None of the ideas discussed recently in Congress would significantly impact this sad state of affairs.

Which is no surprise because the $500 million/year spent by lobbyists for the healthcare industry (which is about four times the amount spent on lobbying by the next-most-active industry -- oil & gas) is aimed at perpetuating and expanding the outrageous practices described in “An American Sickness: How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take It Back” by Dr. Elisabeth Rosenthal.

It was the focus book for a 7/12/2017 meeting of a monthly 11.5-year-old patriotic public-policy study group with 150 members in Salt Lake City UT.

It catalogues all of the outrageous and wasteful practices that have resulted from the failure for decades to enforce the existing anti-trust laws and patent-law requirements.

So trying to fight those practices without a single-payer healthcare system (e.g., Medicare for All) will continue to be the equivalent of fighting a raging forest fire with a squirt gun.

After all, what all 34 of the other OECD countries (which all deliver health-system performance that is superior to the U.S. at an average of half the cost) have in common is a single-payer healthcare system that does not tolerate such nonsense.

Why should any other approach, such as the enactment of any new laws, be expected to have any effect in the light of all of the existing anti-trust laws and patent-law requirements that have been ignored for decades???

*****
WHY TRUE CONSERVATISM REQUIRES ENACTMENT OF “MEDICARE FOR ALL”

As noted above, what all 34 of the world’s other industrialized countries (which have better healthcare at half the cost) have in common is a single-payer healthcare system that does not tolerate the waste/illegalities described in our focus book.

Accordingly, it should be possible to cut healthcare costs in half to bring them in line with the rest of the civilized world, while improving the quality U.S. healthcare to bring it line with the rest of the civilized world.

The key, according to the model of all 34 of the world’s other industrialized countries, is to provide single-payer healthcare.

Which should be possible while REDUCING U.S. Governmental expenditures by $300 Billion/Year --

(1) The 2015 U.S. Census documented that 55.7% of the American population has employment-based insurance. Since the cost of such insurance is deductible to the employer and non-taxable to the employee, then a good estimate of the cost of this insurance to the U.S. government would be the 35% corporate income tax rate * 55.7% of the population = 19.50% of the economy’s total current healthcare costs.

(2) The 2015 U.S. Census also documented the following percentages of the American population receive healthcare from --

19.6% - Medicaid
16.3% - Medicare
4.7% - Military including the V.A.
*****
40.6% – Sub-Total
19.5% - Percentage of economy’s total healthcare costs financed by reduced employer taxes
*****
60.1% - Total of economy’s total healthcare costs currently financed by the U.S. government

-------------------------- Your Suggested E-mail to Sen. John McCain – Part II --------------------------

[This is the remainder of my e-mail which was sent separately a moment ago because of your maximum length of 4000 characters.]

Accordingly, it is respectfully suggested that a single-payer healthcare system (e.g. “Medicare For All”) should cut American healthcare costs in half -- bringing them in line with the rest of the civilized world.

And since the U.S. Government already pays 60.1% of all U.S. healthcare costs, a single-payer healthcare system should produce a 10.1% overall savings for the U.S. Government (60.1% - 50%).

And since American healthcare costs exceed $3 trillion/year, a 10.1% overall savings should produce a U.S. Governmental spending reduction of $303 billion/year.

Accordingly, if true conservatism means reducing the size and cost of government, then true conservatism requires the enactment of “Medicare For All.”

Thank you for your consideration.
