Solve the kidney log jam WITHOUT pigs

Post by Tucker Gurney »

Ted and I recommend the 2010 movie “Never Let Me Go” for a quieter, more thoughtful story of human cloning for organ donation. We found it at the SLC public library. We also found a Scientific American article by the main author of the sixth item on John’s list. It is easier to read and has great diagrams explaining the techniques and results. This link leads to the article <https://www.scientificamerican.com/arti ... ant-organs> that you can buy from Scientific American as a pdf file for $6.99 or get in the November 2016 issue from your public library for free.

When we stepped back to ask why organs fail and why there are not enough donors to satisfy the need, we found helpful information on the web. Some of our questions, answers and references are listed below.

Gurney Question 1: Why are so many people in need of a kidney transplant?
Outline of our answer: Kidney transplants account for 80-90% of organ transplants. There are now about 120,000 people waiting for a new kidney in the US alone. The top two causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Gurney Question 2: What are the sources of organs?
Outline of our answer: Although simple tissues like skin can be stored, organs fail quickly without circulation of oxygenated blood. Thus, transplanted organs are now taken from healthy donors who give one of their two kidneys or part of their liver or from brain dead folks who have agreed to be donors and whose families agree to leave them on life support a short time before donation of their organs. Some scientists are working on alternate sources of organs (cultures, clones, chimeras), but we think that such organs are more than a decade into the future. (No need to get morally outraged yet.)

Gurney Question 3: Why is there a shortage of donated kidneys?
Outline of our answer: Although 35% of Americans have signed donor cards, less than 3% of deaths are compatible with organ donation. Most of us do not become brain dead in a hospital that is prepared for organ donation. Greater use of seat belts and sport helmets also have helped with this. Currently the need for donor kidneys exceeds the supply from brain deaths. However very few people agree to donate a kidney while they are healthy. If 1% of healthy adult Americans offered to donate one of their two kidneys, there would no longer be a shortage.

Gurney Question 4: How could we encourage people to reduce their risk of kidney failure and to become organ donors?
Outline of our answer: Good question. What do you think?

Your Cost & Pollution If You Drive To The Library

If you try to avoid Amazon.com’s $3.99 rental cost of “Never Let Me Go” by driving to the library, then using the IRS’ standard mileage rate of $0.54/mile and including in the calculation your second round-trip to return the video, you are coming out BEHIND if you live more than 1.84 miles from the library. [If you bring your own device to view the video at the library, your library parking charge of $1.50 per half hour after the first, is at least $4.50.]

And the driving/parking costs do NOT even take into account THE POLLUTION your car has caused.
