Bcc: The Approximately 150 Recipients of Our Weekly E-mail
Subject: Makers and Takers: The Rise of Finance and the Fall of American Business – Dec 14
Date: Sat, November 19, 2016
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Our next meeting is Wednesday evening, December 14, at the Salt Lake Public Library (210 East 400 South).

********************
OUR FOCUS BOOK

Makers and Takers: The Rise of Finance and the Fall of American Business by Rana Foroohar (Crown Business 5/17/2016 - $17.85 + shipping or $15.99 Kindle from Amazon.com – 400 pages) -- proposed by our long-time regular, Ted Gurney, who is a retired U/Utah Biology Professor.

[The Salt Lake COUNTY Library has 3 copies, all of which are due back between Nov 26 & Dec 8 with no holds at this time; the Salt Lake CITY Library appears to have no copies.]

Rana Foroohar is Time Magazine’s Assistant Managing Editor and Economic Columnist; she is also a Global Economic Analyst for CNN.

Eight years on from the biggest market meltdown since the Great Depression, the key lessons of the crisis of 2008 still remain unlearned and our financial system is just as vulnerable as ever. Many of us know that our government failed to fix the banking system after the subprime mortgage crisis. But what few of us realize is how the misguided financial practices and philosophies that nearly toppled the global financial system have come to infiltrate ALL American businesses, putting us on a collision course for another cataclysmic meltdown.

Drawing on in-depth reporting and exclusive interviews at the highest rungs of Wall Street and Washington, Rana Foroohar describes how policy makers get caught up in the details of regulating “Too Big To Fail” banks, but the problems in our market system go much broader and deeper than that. Through colorful stories of both "Takers” and "Makers,” she reveals how we should change the system for a better and more sustainable economic future.

RSVP’S REQUESTED BY NEXT FRIDAY

In accordance with our quorum-revision policy of 6/12/2013, instead of waiting until the last week before each monthly meeting to request RSVP’s and canceling if we do not have our minimum quorum of six, RSVP’s are requested in our first-of-the-monthly-cycle weekly e-mail.

Those who have RSVP’d will be informed immediately when we reach six so that they can proceed to read the materials with assurance that a discussion will take place.

If there are not six RSVP’s by 11:59 pm next Friday, then next week’s weekly e-mail will announce that the 12/14/2016 meeting is cancelled.

SKYPE PARTICIPATION

Non-SLCounty residents (and residents who are out of town) are invited to participate in our meeting via Skype.

If you would like to do so, please press your reply button and type “request participation via Skype” and we will contact you to make appropriate arrangements.

********************
We hope to see all of you on Dec 14th to discuss “Makers and Takers: The Rise of Finance and the Fall of American Business.”

Your friend,

John K.
