Original Proposal

Post by johnkarls »

.
Saving Capitalism by Robert Reich was proposed on 10/10/2015 by Ted Gurney, a long-time Reading Liberally regular and a retired U/Utah Biology Professor. However, his original proposal did not contain much information about either the book or Robert Reich. Accordingly, the following e-mail is substituted.

Subject: Our Tenth Anniversary Celebration = Dec 16 -- Saving Capitalism by Robert Reich
Date: Sat, November 21, 2015
Time: 2:06 am MST – 3:21 am MST (due to 100/hour limit)

Dear Friends,

Our next meeting is Wed evening Dec 16.

December 2005 was when we selected our first book and began reading for our first meeting in January 2006.

So in addition to our normal coffee and cookies, please join us for our annual brief pre-discussion celebration with our traditional (for anniversaries) birthday cake.

[Perhaps Bill Lee could remind me whether it is carrot cake or banana cake so I don’t have to waste the rest of the night trying to chase that rabbit.]

OUR FOCUS BOOK

Saving Capitalism by Robert Reich ($18.92 + shipping or $13.99 Kindle from Amazon.com - 304 pages).

Robert Reich served as President Clinton's Secretary of Labor 1993-1997. Robert Reich met President Clinton while both were Rhodes Scholars at Oxford U before they became classmates at Yale Law School.

Prior to the Clinton Presidency, Robert Reich taught at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government 1980-1992. After serving as Secretary of Labor, he taught at Brandeis University (where he was elected Professor of the Year in 2003). During his tenure at Brandeis, he ran for Governor of Massachusetts in 2002, losing the Democratic Primary 32.52% - 24.80% to MA State Treasurer Shannon O'Brien who then lost in the general election to Mitt Romney. In 2006, Robert Reich left Brandeis for U/Cal-Berkeley's Goldman School of Policy. Saving Capitalism is Robert Reich's 16th book (in addition to untold essays and articles).

BOOK REVIEW EXCERPTS

“This is an important and provocative book about the erosion of America’s middle class by one of the nation’s most astute and passionate social critics. Reich provides an original and compelling analysis of how the rules governing America’s form of capitalism have contributed to growing income inequality and of how these rules have been distorted by the role of money in the U.S. political system.” — U/Cal Berkeley Prof. Laura D’Andrea Tyson (Chair of President Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers)

“Robert Reich has written a riveting guide to how our economic and political system has become so badly flawed, distorted by pervasive rent seeking and monopolies. He explains our rising inequality and our poor economic performance. Wholesale reform is needed -- far beyond the usual prescriptions of raising the minimum wage and spending more money on education.” — Columbia U Prof & Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz

“Robert Reich sets the terms for new and more productive debates by rediscovering the political roots of the economic arrangements we too often take for granted. Everyone concerned with our economic future will need to grapple with Reich’s arguments in 2016 and beyond.” — Lawrence H. Summers (Harvard U President Emeritus, former US Treasury Secretary, World Bank Chief Economist, etc., etc., and movie personality in The Social Network about the founding of Facebook in which Douglas Urbanski plays the imperious Harvard President Summers tossing the Winkelvoss twins out of his office when they complain about Mark Zuckerberg)

RSVP’s REQUESTED BY NEXT FRIDAY

In accordance with our quorum-policy revision of 6/12/2013, instead of waiting until the last week before each monthly meeting to request RSVP's and canceling if we do not have our minimum quorum of six, RSVP's are requested in our first-of-the-monthly-cycle weekly e-mail.

Those who have RSVP’d will be informed immediately when we reach six so they can proceed to read the materials with assurance a discussion will take place.

If there are not six RSVP's by 11:59 pm next Friday, then next week's weekly e-mail will announce that the 12/16/2015 meeting is cancelled.
