Inspector Morse, Queen Elizabeth + Assisted Suicide

Devotees of the wildly-popular murder-mystery series that was made by British TV Channel ITV based on Colin Dexter novels and first aired in the U.S. on PBS from 1987-2000, might be interested to know that Assisted Suicide was one of the topics addressed during the series.

[For Reading Liberally members who aren’t familiar with Detective Chief Inspector Morse of Oxford, England, you might want to skip to the reply below which relates a very amusing story about how Queen Elizabeth II was a worshipper of the series!!!]

Of the 33 episodes in the series, Assisted Suicide is addressed in “Dead on Time” which appeared to involve the suicide of an Oxford University Don with a degenerative illness and less than one year to live. Inspector Morse is about to close the case when the suicide’s doctor, who is a leading light of “Dignity” (an Assisted Suicide group in Oxford that may have been fictional), points out that the degenerative illness would have prevented the suicide from shooting himself.

Nevertheless, Inspector Morse was still about to close the case on the basis that the U.K. should have no interest in prosecuting someone who shoots a terminally-ill patient at the request of the terminally-ill patient.

However it turned out that, in a plot worthy of the operatic stage, the person who shot the terminally-ill patient was his wife who, several decades earlier, had been engaged to marry Inspector Morse.

And the reason why the U.K. should be interested in the Assisted Suicide???

Because it was really an attempt by the terminally-ill patient and his wife to frame for pre-meditated murder unconnected to any suicide, the son-in-law who had been responsible for the death of their only child and only grandchild.

Prosecution of an Assisted Suicide???

Of course not!!! [The U.K. is a civilized country!!!] [Moreover, the U.K. is Church of England (aka Episcopal) rather than Roman Catholic!!!]

But pre-meditated murder against the wishes of the victim for reasons unrelated to the victim’s wishes or the victim’s medical condition???

Now that’s a different story!!!

[“Dead on Time” and the other 32 Inspector Morse episodes can be viewed immediately pursuant to a Netflix one-month free introductory offer.]

Queen Elizabeth II’s Worship of Inspector Morse

Post by solutions »

.
In May 1993, Queen Elizabeth knighted John Thaw who played Detective Chief Inspector Morse and Queen Elizabeth often remarked about how Inspector Morse was her favorite TV series.

After all, Inspector Morse was wildly popular from 1987-2000 among non-adolescent females for his being a life-long bachelor who was always searching futilely for female companionship and love, who loved classical music in general and opera in particular, who drove a vintage Jaguar, who drank too much (presumably because of the sorrows of his futile search) and who had dropped out of Oxford U. just before graduating but was nevertheless quite an intellectual.

Legend has it that some time after she had knighted John Thaw who played Inspector Morse, Queen Elizabeth was on a State Visit to a foreign country and her hosts who knew that she was a worshipper of Inspector Morse, mentioned to her that the series had been televised in their country as well as in the U.K.

Queen Elizabeth became extremely excited, so much so that her hosts were utterly amazed!!!

The reason for so much fuss???

Queen Elizabeth had misunderstood!!! She thought that John Thaw was on the premises and that they were about to be re-introduced!!!
