FRIEDMAN WANTS US GOV RESEARCH TO BENEFIT FGN MANUFACTURING

Post by solutions »

.
On 10/14/2011, I commented on the Original Proposal of Thomas Friedman's book (published Sep 2011) to the effect that one of his five pillars for success is U.S. Governmental research and that we already had a unofficial Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mail campaign following our May 2011 meeting that the U.S. Government should patent all inventions resulting from its research (through National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Department of Defense, etc., etc.) AND REQUIRE THAT ANY MANUFACTURING USING THE PATENTS (WHETHER THE LICENSEES ARE U.S.-BASED OR FOREIGN-BASED MULTI-NATIONAL COMPANIES) TAKE PLACE IN THE UNITED STATES.

There are two problems. First, the U.S. Government does NOT patent inventions resulting from the research for which U.S. taxpayers paid!!! So both U.S.-based and foreign-based multi-national companies have been free to take advantage of what the U.S. taxpayers have financed!!!

Second, whereas 2-3 decades ago, the inventions from U.S. governmental research resulted in U.S. manufacturing jobs -- (1) those jobs have now largely been moved to low-wage countries such as China, and (2) the manufacturing jobs from relatively-recent inventions resulting from U.S. governmental research are located "from the get go" in low-wage countries such as China.

Thomas Friedman ignores the issue!!!

Is he an ostrich with his head in the sand??? Or does he have a classic "conflict of interest"???
