NEXT MEETING

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE NINTH (FIRST UNNUMBERED) SECTION BELOW FOR INFORMATION ABOUT OUR NEXT MEETING.

*****
WHO/WHAT WE ARE

We are a U.S. public-policy monthly discussion group founded in the Fall of 2005 that meets on the third Wednesday of each month (with adjustments to avoid secular/religious holidays).

Since February 2020, we have met via Zoom. [For the first 14.5 years of our existence, we met at the Salt Lake City Library (210 East 400 South) with remote participation via Skype.]

The topic is selected by the attendees of the previous month’s meeting. The focus is usually a book but frequently comprises only news items from magazines/newspapers/etc. This bulletin board serves, inter alia, as a place for members to post comments or additional reference materials prior to each meeting.

Our attendance averages 11-12. Participants come from all walks of life but our regular attendees include 4 attorneys and 3 scientists.

There are approx. 225 recipients of our weekly newsletter, many of whom reside outside Utah and participate by Zoom.

*****
40 SIX-DEGREES-OF-SEPARATION E-MAIL CAMPAIGNS, 4 REPORTS & 9 REPRISES

We take great pride in our Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mail campaigns to America's decision makers which, with only a few computer keyboard key strokes, can be sent by each of our members (1) to the decision maker, and (2) to all of the member's friends and acquaintances requesting them to do the same in an unending chain.

Accordingly, we also take great pride that each of our official recommendations has been approved unanimously at one of our meetings or, at most, received only one dissent.

All 40 e-mail campaigns over the years are collected in this section. They include 10 e-mails sent by John Karls that did not receive an official endorsement for the rest of our members to send. The titles of the 30 official recommendations are ALL CAPS and the titles of 10 unofficial recommendations are lower case.

The date of the meeting at which each of the 40 campaigns was adopted is listed so that voluminous additional information about that campaign can be accessed by scrolling down to the sections of this bulletin board that relate to that meeting.

In addition, there are four items whose descriptions begin with “REPORT.” They are reports of our Great Salt Lake Working Group which was formed IAW our “Short-Time Fuse” procedures described in the next section of this bulletin board.

There is also a 1/20/2021 “Report” of our JCPOA Working Group.

Finally, there are eight items whose descriptions begin with “REPRISE.” They describe additional actions that were taken IAW previous official e-mail campaigns to bring their approved policies to the attention of additional decision makers.

REPORT: Destroying Great Salt Lake To Grow Hay For China

Post by johnkarls »

.
The Wanton Destruction of Great Salt Lake In Order To Grow Subsidized Hay For Export To China
vs.
The Official Doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aka The Mormon Church)

As explained on the face of this Bulletin Board for this section --

“[T]here is occasionally posted in the next section ‘Proposed Topic for Future Meetings’ a proposal which has a SHORT-TIME FUSE because a governmental unit is soliciting PUBLIC COMMENTS for a limited time period with a SPECIFIED DEADLINE that will occur before our next regularly-scheduled meeting. In such cases, our weekly e-mail invites all of our approximately 150 members to participate in an Ad Hoc Working Group and, if they take action, the results are posted in this section with the prefix ‘Short Fuse’ -- rather than the meeting date for which further details are available by scrolling down to that date.”

One such proposal was “Destroying Great Salt Lake To Grow Low-Profit Hay For China” (proposed 9/27/2016).

The Utah Governor had appointed a “Water Strategy Team” to prepare for him a Water Strategy White Paper which was made available to the public for the first time on 9/22/2016 with public comments solicited by 10/24/2016.

Accordingly, our weekly e-mail of 10/1/2016 to our approximately 150 members called attention to this imbroglio and invited everyone interested in the issue to become a member of an Ad Hoc Working Group.

The comments of our Working Group were sent Certified Mail - Return Receipt on 10/14/2016 to each of the 38 members of the Governor’s Water Strategy Team, and to both the CEO and the COO of Envision Utah which had prepared the 142-page draft for the Water Strategy Team.

Copies of those letters are embedded in, and can be downloaded from, our 9/27/2016 Topic Proposal “Destroying Great Salt Lake To Grow Low-Profit Hay For China” posted in the next section of this Bulletin Board entitled “Possible Topics For Future Meetings.”

HOWEVER, in “Ready-Fire-Aim” fashion, the Utah Legislature and the Utah Governor had NOT waited for the Water Strategy Report.

Instead, there was enacted on 3/25/2016 Senate Bill 80 which provided that a portion of Utah State Sales Tax would already be dedicated to the construction of the Bear River Pipeline and the Lake Powell Pipeline -- the only two construction projects that have been on the drawing boards in recent years.

Accordingly, it was the judgment of our Working Group that the only effective way to cope with this situation would be to write directly to the top 15 officials governing The Mormon Church to point out that what is transpiring appears to violate the Official Doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aka The Mormon Church).

Here is a copy of that letter which was sent Certified Mail - Return Receipt to each of the 15 top officials of The Mormon Church -- as well as Certified Mail - Return Receipt to the heads of 8 environmental groups and the editors of 6 national newspapers.
Saboteurs deleted the foregoing document on 2/18/2022 - Here is a restoration -

Dear John,

Now that the Working Group approved unanimously the 10/31/2016 letters to the 15 top officials who govern the Mormon Church (as well as approving unanimously the 10/14/2016 letters to the 38 members of the Governor’s Water Strategy Team, and to the CEO and COO of Envision Utah), is their work done?

Regards,

Pat

Dear Pat,

Thank you very much for your e-mail.

Reur Q, the answer is “Yes and No.”

It is now time to pause to see what the Mormon Church will do.

Hopefully, they will adhere to their Religious Principles and take effective action to halt the Wanton Destruction of Great Salt Lake in order to grow subsidized (unprofitable) hay for export to China.

However, it is possible that the Mormon Church will decline to apply its Religious Principles to the real world.

Or it is possible that the Mormon Church will cite Envision Utah and the Governor’s Water Strategy Team AS PROVERBIAL FIG LEAVES to hide from God!!!

NB: “Fig Leaf” is a common idiom that refers to the real-world fig leaves that Adam and Eve used to TRY TO HIDE their sin from God in the Garden of Eden!!!

So why “yes and no”?

If the Mormon Church does not call a halt to the Bear River Pipeline, then it will be time to launch one of our traditional Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mail Campaigns to create the Great Salt Lake National Park comprising the lake and its tributaries.

However, that would not be a “short fuse” emergency that would require the services of our Great Salt Lake Working Group, but could be addressed at one of our regular meetings.

I hope all is well with you. And thank you again for your inquiry.

Your friend,

John K.
