Suggested Discussion Outline

Discussion Outline - Monsoon: The Indian Ocean and the Future of American Power - June 15th

Editorial Note:

Ordinarily, we have a proposed discussion outline though, traditionally, the outline seems to serve little purpose other than to provoke thought on the part of participants, since they usually seem to ignore the outline as soon as the discussion begins.

This month, an outline seems especially preposterous because the suggested reading comprised a book of a couple dozen chapters, each focusing on a country or a particular area within a country abutting the Indian Ocean -- including the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea including, in turn, the Arabian Sea's Persian Gulf.

Obviously there would be two ways or dimensions for a proposed discussion outline =

I. Area survey, country-by-country.

II. Subject survey =

II-A. Religion
II-B. Economics
II-C. Macro-politics - China-India-America
II-D. Micro-politics - country ethnicity and minorities
II-E. Sea geography - the various straights and blocking island chains
II-F. Land geography - the mountains and pipelines, etc., traversing multiple countries
II-G. Etc., etc.

*****
In any event, we have a proposed Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mail campaign set forth in the final weekly e-mail for this month's cycle --

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY TO CARPE THE DIEM

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to attend one of our meetings, this month is a special opportunity to carpe the diem!!!

1. This month's book (Monsoon: The Indian Ocean and the Future of American Power by Robert Kaplan) is an easy-read tour guide of the area, and

2. We will be considering a Six-Degrees-Of-Separation-Email Campaign based on the last paragraph of the Short-Quiz Q&A-20 contained in last Saturday's weekly E-mail to our entire readership of 150 (if you have already erased last Saturday's E-mail, all of the Short-Quiz Answers are posted on www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org and Q&A-20 is attached to this E-mail).

Besides, we have always had a policy that everyone is welcome to attend and participate even if s/he hasn't had time to read the suggested book, and the E-mail Campaign based on Q&A-20 is easy to comprehend without reading the book.

**********
JOE BIDEN'S OP-ED ARTICLE THREATENING NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION OF THE COUNTRY FROM WHICH TERRORISTS OBTAIN/STEAL NUCLEAR MATERIAL TO DESTROY 10 MILLION AMERICANS IN ACCORDANCE WITH OSAMA BIN LADEN'S FATWA (WHICH, NOW THAT HE IS DEAD, CAN NEVER BE REVOKED)

Our proposed six-degrees-of-separation e-mail campaign would encourage President Obama to stick with his proposed $400 billion cut over 12 years from the Defense Department Budget -- and let the Tea-Party Republicans take the lead in making the cuts deeper -- because the United States could survive the nuking of 10 million of its citizens (which, in crass terms, is only 3% of the population) but the Democratic Party could not survive if it took the lead in making deep budgetary cuts to defense and intelligence. (Implied premise = the Republican Party probably could, though that is not really relevant.)

Attached to this e-mail are --

(1) Q&A-20

(2) Senate Foreign Relations Chair and Presidential Candidate Joe Biden's 6/4/2007 Op-Ed Article which threatened nuclear annihilation (please see paragraph 3 of the article) and published a mere 3 months before his participation in the first Democratic-Candidate Presidential Debate at Dartmouth College moderated by Tim Russert.
