Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View by Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer; published by Knopf (2010), 270 pages. The Salt Lake Library has two copies and also one set of audio CDs. However there are already several holds on the books and the CD set. The book is available from Amazon for $17.79 and a Kindle edition for $9.99.

The book is a calm reasoned presentation of how (in the Justice’s opinion) the Supreme Court should do its work and how, in history, it has sometimes failed the challenge. Why do Americans do what the courts say? and how the Supreme Court should apply the great generalities of the Constitution – “freedom of speech,” “equal protection of the laws” – to concrete contemporary disputes.
